Snow Outerwear FAQs

What should I look for in ski and snowboard outerwear?

Look for waterproof and breathable fabrics, sealed or critically sealed seams, functional pockets, adjustable hoods, snow skirts, cuff adjustments and ventilation where available. The right outerwear should protect you from wet weather while still allowing enough movement for skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing or general snow play.

What waterproof rating is best for snow outerwear?

For snow outerwear, 10K waterproofing is a good starting point for resort skiing, snowboarding and general snow play. If you spend more time in wet snow, sleet, rain or backcountry conditions, 15K to 20K waterproofing gives you a higher level of protection. Learn more in our guide to waterproof ratings.

Should I choose insulated snow outerwear or a shell?

Insulated snow jackets and pants are a good choice if you feel the cold or want built-in warmth. Shell outerwear is better if you prefer to layer underneath and adjust your warmth depending on the weather, activity level and resort conditions. For changeable Australian alpine weather, layering under a waterproof outer layer gives you the most flexibility.

Is waterproof snow gear important in Australia?

Yes. Australian alpine weather can be wet, windy and unpredictable, with snow, sleet and rain often arriving in the same trip. Waterproof and breathable snow outerwear helps keep you dry from the outside while reducing that clammy feeling from overheating underneath.

Are ski jackets and snowboard jackets the same?

Ski jackets and snowboard jackets do a similar job, keeping you protected from snow, wind and wet weather. Snowboard jackets are often a little roomier for movement and style, while ski jackets can be slightly more streamlined. The most important thing is choosing a jacket with the right waterproofing, breathability, warmth and fit for how you’ll use it.

What snow outerwear do kids need?

Kids usually need a waterproof snow jacket and snow pants, or a kids’ one piece snow suit, also known as a kids’ snow suit, snowsuit or all-in-one snow suit. A one piece suit can be a great option for younger kids because it helps stop snow getting in at the waist. Add thermal base layers, warm socks, gloves or mitts, and a beanie or helmet liner to keep them comfortable for longer.

How should snow outerwear fit?

Snow outerwear should allow room for base layers and mid layers without feeling oversized or bulky. You should be able to bend, sit, reach and move comfortably. For kids, going up one size can work if there is still enough adjustability at the cuffs, waist and hems to stop snow and cold air getting in.

How do I care for ski and snow outerwear?

Follow the care instructions on the garment label. In general, technical snow outerwear should be washed with suitable performance-wear detergent, without fabric softener, then dried as directed to help maintain water repellency. If your jacket or pants stop beading water, it may be time to refresh the DWR finish.
